People choose wood for its look and flexibility. It can be built tall for privacy, kept low and open for a front yard, stained, painted, or left to weather naturally. Custom heights, gates, and decorative tops are usually easier to get in wood than in pre-made panel systems.
The honest trade-off is maintenance. Central Massachusetts winters, wet springs, and humid summers are hard on any exterior wood. General things homeowners weigh (not engineering advice):
- Ground contact is where wood fails first. Posts sit in damp soil and go through freeze-thaw cycles every winter. Post material and how posts are set make a big difference in lifespan — ask about both when you get to a quote conversation.
- Plan for upkeep. Stain or sealer every few years helps wood hold up and keeps color even. If you don’t want that chore, compare it with vinyl.
- Shade and moisture matter. Sections under trees or along a wet side yard tend to weather faster than sunny, well-drained runs.
- Replacing an old wood fence? Note whether the old posts and panels need to be removed and hauled away; that affects scope.
